Pantone’s Color of the Year has been a major influence in various industries for the last 20 years. The annual chosen color guides consumers purchasing decisions and the year’s overall product development. Fashion, industrial design, home furnishings, as well as packaging, products, and graphic design. These all have the potential to be influenced by the years color of choice.
The Color of the Year: Living Coral
Pantone decided on the color “Living Coral” to represent the year of 2019. Describing it as “vibrant, yet mellow” and that it would provide nourishment and warmth in our continually changing environment. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the company, states that it is not only warmth and welcoming but also life-affirming and versatile. It is energizing but with a softer edge.
Pressman also mentioned during an interview with The Associated Press, that their decision for 2019 was based on looking towards those colors that bring comfort and familiarity. Ones that make us feel good and uplifted and that also works for everybody across the spectrum. From apparel, art, and housewares to home interiors and design.
Living Coral translates to Pantone 16-1546. These set of numbers and letters roughly refer to the color’s level of lightness, hue, and chroma. They also indicate the material (or substance) that the color was printed or placed upon, such as paper or dyed cotton. This numbering system is essential for consistent branding colors across multiple mediums.
